Shangri La Cairns

If location is the ultimate luxury, Shangri-La The Marina, Cairns is the undisputed monarch of Tropical North Queensland. While the brutalist white exterior might whisper of a bygone architectural era, the interiors shout modern nautical cool—think barefoot luxury with a polished edge. Positioned literally atop the marina, this is less a hotel and more a high-end departure lounge for the Great Barrier Reef; the Reef Fleet Terminal is a mere 200-metre stroll, meaning you can roll out of your 400-thread count sheets and onto a catamaran in minutes. Every room features a private balcony, a non-negotiable perk here where the view of bobbing yachts and the Coral Sea is the main event. While some facilities show their age compared to newer contenders, the sheer convenience is unbeatable. Dining at ‘The Backyard’ captures the quintessential Aussie spirit—don't leave without trying the signature whole fried local snapper with sour orange and chilli, best devoured on the deck as the sun dips below the mountains. With a 24-metre outdoor pool and Technogym facilities, it checks the wellness boxes, but let’s be honest: you’re here for the ocean access.
