5-star hotel
naera Hotel Xitang
Forget the clichéd red lanterns and slate roofs of Xitang’s tourist trail. naera Hotel Xitang is a shock to the system—in the best possible way. This is where brutalism meets the wetlands, a sprawling concrete fortress that turns the traditional Jiangnan courtyard inside out. The heart of the property, the 'Naliang' water courtyard, is a masterclass in spatial drama, framing the sky and water in severe, soothing geometric lines. Inside, the minimalist rigor softens. Entry-level rooms start at a massive 65 square meters, offering a calming palette of timber and stone that feels less like a hotel and more like a private gallery. The hardware is impeccable—Dyson supersonic dryers and high-spec sound systems are standard—though the lighting can be moody to the point of impracticality. Dining at 'Liang Shan' is a highlight, where the seasonal organic vegetarian set menu pulls produce directly from the hotel’s own 3,000-mu organic farm. While the service occasionally lacks the telepathic polish of a seasoned Aman, the sheer architectural audacity makes this the most exciting stay in the region.
