TongAn Hotel
If the Wuzhen Theatre Festival is a marathon of avant-garde performances and sleepless nights, the Tong An Hotel is your VIP base camp. Located squarely on Xizha Street, this isn’t a hermetically sealed glass box; it is a piece of living history. The architecture is strictly Republic of China—think intricate wood carvings, slate gray bricks, and an aesthetic that feels like a film set. Inside, the experience is authentic, sometimes aggressively so. The traditional wooden construction means sound travels; you might overhear the faint rehearsal of lines from the street, adding to the festival immersion (though light sleepers should pack earplugs). The amenities, however, are a welcome modern counterpoint. The 300-square-meter outdoor pool—a rarity in this protected scenic area—offers a silent respite from the crowds. Dining is a main event here. Skip the tourist traps and head straight to the hotel’s ‘Hejia Xiaoguan’. Their Braised Mutton is legendary—tender, rich, and the perfect fuel before a four-hour play. Service is sharp, with the distinct perk of unlimited buggy transfers, allowing you to glide past the pedestrian gridlock like a festival headliner. It’s not the newest hotel in town, but it’s the only one that feels like it’s part of the script.
