5-star hotel
Shelborne South Beach
It’s rare for a $100 million renovation to feel this effortless, but The Shelborne by Proper has managed to pull off the impossible: making a 1940s icon feel strictly current without erasing its soul. Gone is the tired party-hotel veneer; in its place, ADC Atelier has installed a sophisticated, limestone-floored sanctuary that feels more like a cinematic set than a hotel lobby. The original Morris Lapidus grandeur remains—the neon-lit porte-cochère is still a knockout—but the vibe has shifted from spring break chaos to ‘quiet luxury’ cool. Upstairs, the rooms trade square footage for serious style. While standard footprints remain historically compact (don't expect sprawling dance floors), the details—ceramic sconces, 400-thread count linens, and the scent of Bergamot from the Aesop amenities—distract you entirely. The real scene, however, is downstairs. At Pauline, Chef Abram Bissell’s Rock Shrimp Fideos are the kind of dish you’ll text home about, while the speakeasy, Little Torch, serves a Golden Milk Punch that justifies the headache you might nurse the next morning. The pool deck, anchored by that legendary 1950s diving board, finally feels like the glamorous swimming hole it was always meant to be. It’s South Beach, grown up.
