Gorgeous George
If the Silo District is the polished face of Cape Town's renaissance, Gorgeous George is its rebellious, nocturnal cousin. Housed in two conjoined heritage buildings in the gritty heart of the CBD, this property doesn't just embrace adaptive reuse; it weaponizes it. Designer Tristan du Plessis has stripped back the Edwardian and Art Deco bones to expose raw concrete beams and steel ducting, softening the blow with emerald velvet piles and brass accents. The rooms are moody, masculine sanctuaries. Expect hand-painted wall murals by local artist David Brits and bathrooms featuring basins on hand-turned Gregor Jenkin stainless steel legs—a tactile delight. The in-room amenities shun generic luxury for local flavor: think pods of Truth Coffee (a Cape Town institution) and eco-conscious, plastic-free toiletries. But the hotel’s heartbeat—and occasionally its headache—is the Gigi Rooftop. Here, under the 'Hello Gorgeous' neon sign, the city’s creative set dines on Cape Malay fish tartare and whole braaied fish. It is loud, unapologetic, and undeniably cool. Service is sharp (rated 9.7/10), but be warned: the thumping bass from the DJ decks can bleed into the upper-floor suites. This isn't a retreat; it's a scene.
